Freedom of Information Act Requests

The City of Orient is committed to compliance with the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140.

Pursuant to Resolution No. 2604-01, passed by the City Council on April 27, 2026, all requests for public records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act must be submitted in writing and delivered to the City by one of the following methods only, effective May 1, 2026:

Important Notice

Effective May 1, 2026, FOIA requests submitted by email, text message, social media, or any other method not listed above will not be considered properly received by the City for purposes of the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.

To ensure proper receipt and timely processing, all FOIA requests must be submitted in writing either in person or by U.S. Mail to the address listed above.

Request Requirements

FOIA requests should clearly describe the records being requested with as much specificity as possible.

Requests should include:

Name of requester
Mailing address
Telephone number or other contact information
Clear description of the records requested
Whether the request is for inspection or copies
Whether the request is for a commercial purpose

Response Time

The City will respond to properly submitted FOIA requests in accordance with the timelines and requirements set forth in the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.

Copying Fees

Copying fees may be charged as permitted by law. If no fee is required, records will be provided without charge.

Certain public records and public information may be available on the City’s website. Requesters are encouraged to review available online materials before submitting a FOIA request.
